The Local Bioethics Commission
Local Bioethics Commissions (set up in 2000 on the basis of legal regulations applying to the protection of animals) are responsible for the enforcement of legal regulations that experimental animals be adequatly protected. In Krakow, there have been operating two Local Bioethics Commissions of which one, chaired by Prof. L. Antkiewicz-Michaluk, works on the premises of the Institute of Pharmacology. The Commission has 10 members (+Chair-person), of whom two are the Institute’s employees.
The Commission’s responsibilities are, among others, to accept experimental procedures using animals, to express their opinion from the viewpoint of bioethics on manuscripts prepared for publication, and to check up conditions of breeding animals in the Institute’s labs.
